Kauai

We dragged Jill out at the obscene hour of 4:00 am to take us to the airport for the Kauai flight. What a great sport! So, the flight went well, the rental car was ready for us and we headed to Princeville to drop off stuff, even though the room wouldn't be ready. After checking in we headed down to one of our favorite places on Kauai, the Kileaua Lighthouse and the Wildlife Refuge there. When we were there last April there had been hundreds of nesting birds, but not so many this time. It was still great!

This baby Shearwater was just a ball of fluffy gray feathers. He was pretty small and buried in his cubby. The adults were all out fishing and would return at dusk.

This is the wonderful view from the lighthouse grounds. We think this is Secret Beach, one of the things on our list for this trip.

This is an adult Red Footed Boobie. They have this incredible blue bill. There were still quite a number of them on one hill.

And all you Belize folks certainly will recognize this Frigate Bird. There were about 8 of them hovering over the lighthouse most of the time we were there.

And then our favorites made an appearance! This is the white tailed Tropic Bird.....

and his cousin the red-tailed Tropic Bird. They are so graceful and just dance around in the air. Beautiful to watch!

And as we were leaving we spotted this little Shearwater chick. He's older and beginning to get his flight feathers.

After several hours there, we headed down toward Hanalei and had lunch at a Thai restaurant just outside Princeville. Then stopped at one of the beaches just past Hanalei and sat and admired the water until the room was ready about 2:15. Headed back and finished checkin and got settled. Went out later and got some groceries and have just been vegging since. We're both pretty weary tonight! Nice to be back on this beautiful island!
