Aeration Day!

Ah, the dreaded day! It was beautiful out though and the soil nice and moist for the aerator! John borrowed Scott's truck and went and got the machine and then came home and we went to it...John on the machine and Jean with rope tied to the roll bar making sure it didn't roll down the hill. We were quite successful.
Nice deep plugs!
Then time to seed.
Then time to stretch tired muscles with a walk through the garden...
The Beauty Berry was spectacular this year! Best ever!

We loaded the machine back into the truck and headed to Durham and returned it. Came home and collapsed for the rest of the day. Decided that was the last time we were ever doing that again :-)

Just a Regular Day...

Boy, we did get a rainstorm this morning....great puddles for splashing! Ryan and Grandma both had a wonderful time playing in the water! Jill, Jean and John dropped Ryan off at school and then looked for a kitchen table....went to quite a number of places but found something different at Haverty's and she bought it. Very functional for Japan! No picture though. We stopped for lunch at Five Guys - our first time there. They are popping up all over around here and the burgers were delicious--and the fries endless and great! Success! Ryan was home when we got back--Dave had picked him up....
Good buddies...need something to do!
Some tickle time with Grandpa works!

Dave's day wasn't wasted...he finished painting the kitchen.
Colin had a great paper mache project for school to do....
He had to make an instrument. There is a shaker inside the box so you can shake while you strum the strings. very cleaver. Ryan made a great shaker also.
They tried to make a trap for the bug (upper green), but he got out every time. Fun!
Then finally, after much requesting from Ryan, Colin opened the Lego Castle box and began putting it together. He's gotten very good at putting those together!!!
and ryan got to put the King together with all his armor, sword, shield etc.
and Dad couldn't stay away once he got the paint cleaned up. They made great progress on it! We had a very good dinner and a little homework and then the day was over. We head out in the morning...a very short visit, but very fun!

Happy Birthday Colin!

We headed for Va. Beach this morning to celebrate Colin's 7th Birthday! How can he be 7?? Not long after we arrived, Jill was taking birthday cookies to his class for lunch and asked us to come along. What a great classroom he has!
Nice individual desks..they all have water bottles at
their desk as studies show students learn better when hydrated...
great computers...
They're reading chart to track how many books they have read at home. Colin, Emily and Caty just blasted off that morning.
It was fun to meet the kids in his class during lunch. We were very impressed with the discipline. Great School!
Whoa..look what was in Colin's lunchbox! Fun!
Mural in the main hall for the dolphins...there were many more in the school. We made a couple of stops and then picked up Ryan at school. We had some fun time with him when we got home. Then before we knew it...
the birthday boy came home on the bus...
gotta love Birthday presents....
Oh...I think he likes it!!
Putting together one of the lever projects from his lever kit.
One more birthday surprise...his old friend and
neighbor from Hawaii, Conner and his Mom came to dinner.
And Dad got home just in time for this...
Happy Birthday to you......
The boys got great taste---mint chocolate chip cake from Stone Cold -- YUM!

Conner and Ginny headed home after dinner and even though it's his birthday there is still...
Homework...but Dad got to help and he rocks at homework!
and he does a great bedtime story too...very fun day!
Thanks for letting us share it with you!

Mariner's Landing Balloon Festival - Smith Mountain Lake, VA

We headed for Mariner's Landing at Smith Mountain Lake for their Balloon Festival. Gretchen had found out about it from her Photo Meet Up group. It was a rather convoluted drive up there, very windy. When we arrived there wasn't much evidence of any balloon presence, but then we saw some baskets in trucks in the parking lot. Found out the launch would be at 5:30 but they weren't sure of the location yet. The pilots were going to get together at 4:30 to decide and the advice was to follow the pilots to the location. However, it was only 2:30 so we spend some time wandering around and Gretchen and John played with their cameras.
A very cool spider web.

About 4:30 we headed back down to the parking lot to see what was happening. The pilots were taking off to the pavillion for their meeting so we hopped in the car and followed them up the hill and waited...and waited...and waited. They finally decided to launch at the entrance about a mile down the road so everybody headed down there. It was awesome!! Well worth the wait!! (For detailed info on the balloon parts visit www.chm.bris.ac.uk/webprojects2003/hetherington/final/Hot_air_balloon_parts.html#parachute)

First burn to heat up envelope.
She's straight up now...
Meanwhile, other balloons were preparing for launch too...

First one off...
Bass Masters off...
Quite a sight!

We followed them for awhile but
then let them fly on into the sunset.

We stopped on the way back and had dinner and then drove home a less windy way and got home about 9:30. What a GREAT day--and this was just a small festival. Maybe we'll have to consider New Mexico!!

There's a new Commander in the house!

John and I headed up to Va. Beach on Friday to finish up the move in and do some cleaning from Irene. We got alot done, doors cleaned of sand and seeds, windows cleaned, lawn mowed and sprayed...good work! Jill and Dave came up early Sunday from Duck where they had been helping Dave's folks clean up the beach house for the last three days. Irene was not nice to Duck, but there was no structural damage to the Baird house, only sand and a very littered beach full of wood from docks, everything imaginable. They had gotten a lot of the food prep done while down there! Time for the last minute touches they haven't had time to finish....
Dave has a green thumb we didn't know about!

John working on water stain on fence.

Last of the dusting!
Ah, Dave's wonderful smoked beef tenderloin!
Watermelon boat - yum!
The Bairds and boys arrived from the beach
with great pictures of Dave's path to today!
