National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific "The Punchbowl

Seems Ryan did have a 24 hour bug but got up pretty chipper on Tues. morning with no fever. So, Colin and Jill headed for Bible School and Ryan and Grandma and Grandpa headed for Punchbowl, the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific. Since 1949 this has been the final resting place for over 45,000 men and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the Pacific. In addition, there are the names of over 28,000 carved into the walls of the side monuments "whose earthly resting place is known only to God". As you climb the 7 sets of 10 steps to the top (Ryan and I counted them all), there is a huge statue of Columbia in the center, flanked by two open halls that have mosaics illustrating various WWII and Korean battles with description panels on the side. There is a viewpoint you can go out to to see over the whole Cemetery as well as out to Diamond Head and over Waikiki (not the picture shown below).

After our walk through the Cemetery, we headed up the Mt. Tantalus-Round Top road for a view over the city! What a magnificent view it was!! And one more windy, narrow road to keep Grandpa in practice!

Then home for lunch and some baseball and soccer until Colin and Mom got home from VBS.
