Haleakala Valley - Hike to " Ka Lu'u o ka oo" crater

This morning we are back at Haleakala Crater, ready to head down to Ka Lu'u o ka oo" on the Sliding Sands Trail. It decends into the crater about 2 1/2 miles in an environment much like what you think the moon would be like. Dusty! Easy down, harder coming out at 9000'. The first picture was taken at about 8:00 am. The final crater picture was taken just before noon. Note how the colors change. Reds which are usually more intense in the early morning get redder up here as the sun gets higher.

Alot of silversword plants are growing along the sides of the crater. They almost glow in the sunlight.

Heading back out through the one rocky section.

Wonderful hike! Don't miss it if you get this far!!

We stopped by the Kula Lodge for a late lunch and found this wonderful Jacaranda Tree. They have been beautiful all through this elevation all week! Then off to wash off all the dust and relax.
