Waimea Canyon

We got up very early Saturday morning and drove around the island to Wiamea Canyon--"the Grand Canyon of the Pacific". It was beautiful. The lush green against the red rock was stunning. We had in and out clouds and some mist and rain, but mostly short showers. We took a short nature hike and learned the names of some of the plants we've been seeing. We drove to the top and then came down to a small Museum and Lodge where we had lunch. There are wild chickens all over the island--and the roosters don't particularly care if the sun is coming up or it's 2:00 at night. There were a bunch of chickens all along the way and particularly in one parking lot two hens with their chicks were reaping the benefit of crackers and granola bars. It was a wonderful day. As we returned the sun was shining on the water with the waves crashing against the cliffs and along the beaches. We took a short walk when after dinner and saw a rooster and Colin asked him very nicely to ask his friends not to crow under our windows in the morning...we'll see if it does any good.
