Burrowing Owls and Edison & Ford Winter Estates

Leisurely morning today...not out the door until 9:15! We headed to Cape Coral, famous for their Burrowing Owls. We stopped at the info center right after the causeway and the guy in there knew exactly where to go...right in the middle of a residential area was a vacant lot with about 6 nests. And we found them. Very cute guys. Most were immature but growing up right in the midst of houses and condos.

That accomplished we headed for the Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Ft. Myers. They are right next to each other. The ground are incredible as Edison used the area to grow plants that he used in his research. There is a Banyon tree that was given to him as a small 6' plant by Harvey Firestone in 1925. It now is over an acre in diameter and reported to be the second largest in the world (includes branches). Yes it is one tree. The Ford Estate was referred to as "The Mangos" and there are Mango trees everywhere...with lots of fruit and also manner of other exotic trees and bushes. His original office and laboratory are here and the museum has alot of his original inventions displayed. It is right on the shores of the Caloosahatchee River and there is a beautiful waterfront where we had lunch and saw this nice yellow-crowned Night Heron. New birds every day! It was a very pleasant day and it's raining again--hard at the moment so should keep things cool again tomorrow.
