Off to Fredericksburg this mornng. It's 65 miles north of San Antonio in the Texas Hill Country. Lots of farming and ranching around here. The town itself was founded by 1946 by 120 German immigrants under the auspices of the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas. Today it's most famous for it's 3 mile Main Street full of shops and restaurants. That was why we were here!!
Der Kuchen Laden "for the little chef in all of us" is a
culinary heaven. Small rooms and alcoves hold an
unbelievable number of cooking items, large and small...
I'd heard about it for years, but it certainly met expectations!
Main Street full of old stone buildings and newer storefronts.
We had lunch at the Peach Tree Tea Room - excellent!
After our shopping we did a little historical wandering.
Fleet Admiral Chester A. Nimitz was born in this house. His Grandfather was one of the original settlers and owned a hotel in town. Admiral Nimitz was Commander of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. As Representative of the US, Admiral Nimitz signed the Japanese surrender papers on his flagship, USS Missouri, Sept 2, 1945 in Tokyo Bay. There is a World War II Museum as well as several Nimitz related displays around town.
The Old St. Mary's Church (die aulte kirche). The Parish dates back to 1846 with the arrival of the German settlers. This building was completed in 1863.
Interior of the Old St. Mary's Church.
As the parish expanded there was need for a new church build in 1906.
They went all out!
It's a stunning building.
Time to head home. We made a quick stop at the Wildseed Farms. None of their flowers were in bloom at this time of year but it must be spectacular in the spring and early summer. Just hundreds of seed packets available right now. www.wildseedfarms.com. We got home and grabbed a quick dinner and then went to pick up Tyler for his soccer practice. We were bundled up...chilly evening!
They're just practicing right now....no games for 6 weeks or so.
Scrimmaged with a girls team...
Stopped by Baskin and Robbins on the way home for Tyler's ice cream. The rest of us passed. We were the only customers...not surprising...not a good night for ice cream! Fun day again!
